چکیده
Sir, Abramson et al. have recently presented a follow-up study of the pulmonary function in 66 cases with systemic sclerosis (SSc).' We have also performed a follow-up of spirometric function study in 52 patients with SSc by Pulmostar (Fenyves-Gut, Basel, Switzerland) volumestable equipment.2 The female/male ratio was 51/1, and 15 patients showed symptoms of diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis. The mean age at the onset of disease was 38.4 ± 8.8 years. The second investigation followed our first pulmonary function tests by a mean of 4.2 ± 3.8 (18) years. In contrast to the geographic and genetic differences between the two patient populations, our findings, as shown in Table I, give further additional data that the majority of patients have abnormal lung function when first tested, but overall significant worsening of spirometry (including vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV,)) is not characteristic of the

Contamination of Blood Cultures 1055
Contamination of blood cultures is believed to occur mainly during the venepuncture procedure. Consequently, meticulous preparation of the venepuncture site is widely recommended. To determine whether the contamination rate is indeed affected by the quality of the antiseptic procedure at the venepuncture site, 181 paired cultures were collected from 176 patients during a 6-month period after ei...

Background: Blood culture is the criterion standard for identifying children with bacteremia. However, elevated false-positive rates are common and are associated with substantial health care costs. The aims of this prospective study were to: 1) determine the rate of blood culture contamination 2) determine variety and frequency of contaminant bacteria 3) compare the duration of hospital stay a...
متن کاملBlood collection staff education in the prevention of venepuncture failures and donor adverse reactions: from inexperienced to skilful staff.
Dear Sir, Blood collection is the first link of the transfusion chain, which is of utmost importance for the quality and safety of transfusion treatment, as well as for donor satisfaction. Venepuncture failures and adverse reactions not only reduce the precious blood supplies available for transfusion treatment, but also discourage future donations1,2. Thus, each blood-collecting establishment ...
متن کاملDiversion of first blood volume results in a reduction of bacterial contamination for whole-blood collections.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES In a previous study we established a reliable setpoint for the prevalence of bacteria in whole blood. In the present study we investigated the possible preventive effect, of diversion of the first 10 ml of a blood donation, on the bacterial contamination rate. MATERIALS AND METHODS To divert the first 10 ml of a whole-blood donation, we used a special five-bag system...
متن کاملEffects of volume and site of blood draw on blood culture results.
Blood culture contamination greatly affects clinical decisions. Hence, it is of interest to assess the influence of factors such as the volume of blood drawn and the site of blood draw on the rates of blood culture contamination. In a retrospective study, blood cultures from infants and children up to 18 years of age who had at least one positive blood culture during the year 2006 were analyzed...
